A uniform is important as it helps to define what a school stands for. A smart, well-presented uniform indicates a willingness to comply with school rules and is good preparation for learning. It also shows that our students are proud to be part of the Edgar Wood Academy, representing our school and exemplifying our high standards to the local community. We have worked hard to ensure that our uniform is both affordable and durable, thereby providing value for money for parents and carers.

Main school uniform

The branded blazer and tie are compulsory items. Students can wear either a branded or plain black skirt. The school trousers, PE shorts and socks are all plain black and non-branded. We have tried to keep as much as possible of the uniform non-branded so that parents and carers can use other outlets for items such as trousers, shirts, and skirts.

Black shoes should also be worn and no trainer type shoes will be allowed. Footwear must be sensible and appropriate to school wear, which excludes high heels, sandals or boots.

We also ask that added hair colours are natural. Short back and sides haircuts are acceptable; however close shaved heads, are not and patterns or lines cut into hair or eyebrows are not acceptable. Students will not be allowed to wear makeup in years 7, 8 and 9, in years 10 and 11 it must be subtle. For health and safety reasons, nail polish and acrylic nails will not be allowed. In relation to jewellery, students are allowed to wear a wristwatch and plain stud earrings. We ask that watches and plain stud earrings should not exceed a value of £20.

PE kit

The only branded PE item which is compulsory is the short-sleeved PE top. The PE shorts and socks are all plain black and non-branded. Should you wish to, you can choose to buy an outdoor branded PE zip sweatshirt, although this is optional. A full list of other items for PE, such as trainers, boots and shinpads will be updated on this website.

In relation to affordability, we have worked with Broadbent's of Middleton to design a uniform that matches the prices of existing schools and the supply of uniform will be available from local suppliers in both Middleton and Rochdale.
